From Blues to Rainbows: The mental health and well-being of gender diverse and transgender young people in Australia, is the culmination of many months of engagement with gender diverse and transgender young people across Australia. Historically, transgender and gender diverse people face social and legal barriers that restrict their freedoms and dignity. United Nations international human rights principles and new Australian national legislation now provide protection for people on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status. Much past research on gender diverse and transgender young people has privileged psycho-medical frames or focussed on victimisation. Conversely, in this report we privilege self-definition and actively look for alternative, positive stories.
The OVOLOW Resource Hub acknowledges First Nations peoples as the Traditional Custodians of their unceded lands, seas, and waters of so-called Australia, and pays respect to all First Nations Elders. This always has been and always will be Aboriginal land. We pay our respects to all First Nations LGBTIQA+ people with disability and recognise the distinct and significant contributions they make to Australian life and disability and LGBTIQA+ communities.
‘Nothing about us, without us’
The OVOLOW Resource Hub recognises LGBTIQA+ people with disability as the leaders and co-creators of this work. We acknowledge the generosity of this community whose stories, knowledge, experiences, and expertise make these resources possible for the betterment of all. ‘Nothing about us without us’.
